Virtual currency top-up vs spend rates must be calculable

Aliases: coin conversion · gem rate · two-layer pricing

What it is

Legal tender is first swapped for gems, coins, or points, then those buy items. A calculable rate means primary-school arithmetic can answer: how much legal tender this top-up is, how much this item is in legal tender, whether leftover coins will be eaten. It is not a lock on the pay page, and not loot odds—only that the exchange between two price layers is transparent.

Why it happens

Two-layer prices break the legal-tender anchor. People remember “six bucks a pack of coins” and cannot compute “a sword at 70 coins in money,” especially when denominations are deliberately not round. Top-up packs that do not match spend prices force bundling: 10 coins short, only a 60-coin pack to buy. If the rate moves with campaigns, the same item costs different legal tender yesterday and today while still showing the same coin price; cross-day compare dies. Calculable means a legal-tender equivalent at the spend point, or coin prices that are clean multiples of packs, with leftover rules stated.

Studying it

Have people buy an item priced in coins, given only the top-up ladder. Compare no conversion, approx legal tender at spend, pack sizes that multiple cleanly. Watch whether they can compute legal-tender cost and whether they are forced onto a larger pack.

Independent variables: legal-tender equivalent shown, pack granularity, leftover expiry. Dependent variables: estimation error, unnecessary over-top-up, later “I was forced to round up.”

Do not mix probability play into the same experiment. Coins in games also have an affective account; labs are cleaner with a neutral item.

Where it stops holding

Some jurisdictions treat redeemable tokens as payment instruments; rate disclosure is compliance, not a UX extra. Decorative points that buy nothing are not this currency. Live-gift ladders priced directly in legal tender have no second layer. On-chain assets with a live rate need a refresh time, not a fake fixed ratio.

Applying it

  • Top-up packs show legal tender and coins credited; the spend page shows approx legal tender for that item, or “how many buys with current balance.”
  • Avoid prices that only a large pack can exactly meet; if leftover exists, say whether it expires.
  • When a campaign rate ends, coin price and legal-tender equivalent move together, not one side only.
  • Verify with help covered: “about how much real money to buy this, and must I top up again.” No legal tender, or a forced extra pack, fails the rate.
