Renewal date and amount need advance notice

Aliases: upcoming renewal · auto-renewal notice · upcoming charge

What it is

Auto-renewal will capture again when the period ends. Advance notice means, before that capture, delivering “which day, how much, which method” into a window where people can still change or cancel. It is not the one-time trial-to-paid reminder, and not a price-increase notice—those are later-period terms changing. Here the plan and price are assumed unchanged; the question is only whether to pay because time is up.

Why it happens

Subscription moves the decision from each purchase to a check long ago. Memory drops “I agreed then,” especially on annual plans and low-attention tools. Without a concrete amount and date before due, people meet a fait accompli on the statement, and cancel happens in anger. Too early and the notice is swiped as marketing; too late and the window cannot change a card or cancel. The notice must be actionable: the same message reaches the manage page, not “will renew” with no door. The amount must be the capture (tax in, promo expired back to list). Reusing the signup promo price is a second shock.

Studying it

Send reminders at different leads: none, on due day, a legal or chosen window (e.g. 3–7 days), earlier. Watch cancel versus statement disputes.

Independent variables: days of lead, amount and method included, manage entry in the message, whether expiry of a promo states the next list price. Dependent variables: active management after the notice, chargebacks and support after renew, restating date and amount before capture.

Labs cannot wait a real billing cycle; use calendar scenarios or diaries. Open rate is not success—opened mail can still omit the amount. Renewal notices are widely discussed; do not invent open or cancel percentages.

Where it stops holding

Where law sets a minimum lead, the window cannot be shorter, but the amount still has to be stated. Failed renewals for insufficient funds are failure-plus-grace notices, not another “upcoming charge.” Household plans separate payer and user; the notice must reach the payer. A one-time purchase mislabeled as a subscription should be retyped, not sent a renewal reminder.

Applying it

  • Inside the cancellable window, send date, amount, and method, linked to manage.
  • The first capture after a promo ends is list price; the notice shows “this period / next capture” side by side.
  • The in-app subscription page always shows next capture date and amount; do not depend on the mail still being kept.
  • Verify by running the notice on a test subscription before due; close the mail and ask which day and how much. Failure: no amount, or cancel cannot be found.
