The empty view is the natural surface for first-use teaching

What it is
First use has to pick a teaching surface: a full-screen tour, a coach mark, an email, or the work area while it still has no content. Using the empty state as that surface writes “what will live here, and how the first item appears” on the coordinates the content will occupy. This is not about classifying blankness as zero-data versus no-results—that is the empty view as a diagnostic component. It is about where the onboarding flow should put the lesson: on the board people are already looking at and about to fill, not on a new layer that steals the look.
Why it happens
Session one has one budget of attention. Tours and bubbles first pull that budget off the task and promise to give it back; an empty work area has no rows to click, so the current task already is “understand this place.” Teaching need not interrupt; it is the place’s job description. Spatially, the sentence and the future object coincide, so once the list fills, people still have “the first item grew from here” as an anchor and need not recall a masked sentence. Temporally, emptiness only lasts while there is no content, so teaching ends when the first item arrives—no separate “seen” switch. Putting the lesson on another channel abandons a surface with no competing information whose duration exactly covers ignorance. Products that leave the empty view to illustration and put the lesson in a door tour leave the best surface blank and pay for a costlier interruption.
Where it stops holding
A filtered-empty, a failed load, or a permission-empty is not “hasn’t started”; teaching first use there teaches the wrong cause. An expert who deleted everything is not on a first-use surface; a welcome line treats emptying as enrollment. In a multi-pane product with one empty container and data elsewhere, speak only in that empty pane; do not fire a global tour because “something is empty.” A demo account or samples that fill the work area erase this surface; teaching has to move, not pretend emptiness remains.
Applying it
- Write the first-use sentence into the work area for that user and container when it has never held content; do not duplicate it in a door tour.
- Enable the first-use template only on zero-data emptiness; filtered-empty, errors, and permission-empty get other copy, not the first-use art.
- Remove the first-use empty the moment the first item exists; do not leave “get started” competing with a real list.
- Verify by blocking tours and bubbles, leaving only the work area, and asking someone new what this place is for and where the first item comes from. If they cannot answer, the lesson is not on this surface.
