Money and serials should sit on the trailing edge so places can be compared

What it is

Amounts, serials, and counts sit on the trailing edge (the right edge in left-to-right copy) so the units place shares a vertical and a glance can tell which is larger. Left-aligned, 99 and 1099 have units two cells apart, and comparison starts with a mental pad. This is which edge the column docks to, not whether glyphs are tabular. Tabular figures size the cells. The dock decides which end place value grows from.

Why it happens

Place value grows from the trailing end: one more digit appears toward the high place. Trailing-edge alignment lets that extra digit grow toward the high side while low places stay put, and comparison becomes looking down the column. Leading-edge alignment flushes the high places and lets the low places wander; a short number looks “about as left” as a long one, and magnitude is flattened. Centering is worse: both ends move. In a trailing script the trailing edge is the left; the principle is unchanged — align the low-place end of the number, not the physical right of the screen. Serials are not money, but comparing “item 9” and “item 12” still wants units stacked; a leading-aligned index column lets the visual weight of 9 versus 10 lie about order.

Where it stops holding

Phone numbers, postal codes, account ids, and version strings are not compared as magnitudes; flush-start or alignment on a delimiter matches how they are read. A text header over numeric cells can stay start-aligned while the numbers dock to the trailing edge; do not drag the numbers left to make the column “one alignment.” A lone number with no neighbour to compare has no comparison task; either edge is fine. Some currency traditions park the symbol to the left of the amount and out of the column’s alignment — a column of its own, or hung outside — so the trailing-edge dock is not washed out.

Applying it

• Dock amounts, quantities, serials, and percents to the trailing edge. Name columns on the same sheet still use the start edge.
• Fill a column with 99, 100, and 1099 as live values and squint at the units place. If it is not one vertical, the dock is wrong.
• In right-to-left UI, write the rule as “trailing edge,” not as a copied physical right.
