Repairing global emphasis means re-ranking, not stacking new cues

Aliases: subtract to repair · no fourth kind of loud · re-rank not restyle

What it is

The campaign bar is no longer clicked, so a modal is added, then a full-bleed ribbon, then a moving gesture coach — each round raising the ceiling on an already saturated stage. Click-through does not rise. Kinds of device do. Repairing global emphasis is making other things lighter so the target is relatively first again, not inventing a fourth way for the target to shout. Stacking keeps issuing currency inside inflation. Re-ranking withdraws it. On a page that has already accumulated, any request to “emphasise it a bit more” is pointed the wrong way by default.

Why it happens

Capture and contrast both need “louder than the neighbour.” When neighbours are already at the ceiling, louder only lifts the ceiling; adaptation follows that rung; the relative gap returns to zero, only the whole page is noisier. Demoting neighbours creates a gap at once: the target need not become stranger, others become lighter. This is not the same as one author “using fewer kinds of emphasis.” The objects here belong to different teams; demotion is a product decision (whose metric yields), not a style choice (a less red red). So a repair meeting’s output has to be a list: which features leave the strongest rung — not a spec for a new modal.

Where it stops holding

If the target is physically unseen (below the fold, occluded), fix visibility before demoting neighbours, or the demotion will not make it seen. When contrast is below an accessibility floor, raising the target’s contrast is legitimate, provided neighbours are not raised with it. Incident communication may lift the ceiling briefly, with a moment it comes down; leaving incident devices in as daily campaigns is stacking as a permanent repair.

Applying it

  • Any ticket that “this entry is not visible enough” forbids new devices by default. List current strongest rungs first; pick one to exit.
  • Legal exits: remove, drop to the next rung, move to a secondary entry. Illegal: swap in another equally ceilinged style.
  • The repair release notes say what was subtracted, not what new coach was added.
  • Check: pick an entry to rescue. For two weeks, only subtract: neighbours drop a rung, the target’s pixel spec is frozen. Compare first-click share with the two weeks before. A rise is a repair. No movement: ask whether the target should not have been first (content rank is wrong), rather than adding a modal. If anyone inserts a new device during the repair, void the round and restart the freeze clock.
