A scrambled order makes automatic actions miss
Aliases: habit slip · automaticity · order stereotype
What it is
Once skilled, Confirm / Cancel is not read; it is fired by automaticity—the hand already going to the slot. When order contradicts compiled place memory, the movement becomes a slip: the intent was cancel, the key was confirm. Scramble is not “it looks odd.” It reverses consequences under speed, distraction, and a stack of similar dialogs.
Why it happens
Skill takes visual checking out of the loop. Once a dialog is classified as “one of those save boxes,” the motor program points at the habitual slot and the label is too late. That is why wrong presses rise under time pressure and when confirms chain: automaticity wins when time is short. Scramble also comes from a product contradicting itself, not only from crossing platforms: OK on the left in Settings and on the right on the uninstall page voids place memory every time, so people either slow down to read or gamble. If a destructive dialog puts danger in the confirm slot, automaticity fires delete as an ordinary OK—an accident of order times danger, not a copy failure alone.
Studying it
Have skilled users work through a batch of isomorphic dialogs, with one or two order swaps or a danger action dropped into the confirm slot. Allow them to go fast.
Independent variables: whether order is swapped, where in the sequence the swap appears, whether labels change at the same time. Dependent variables: slip rate, immediate “I hit the wrong one,” whether slowing after a swap lasts.
If people are told to “read the buttons carefully,” automaticity is switched off and slips vanish. The instruction should be to finish a batch of everyday confirms quickly; reading is optional.
Where it stops holding
Novices have no place memory; scramble shows up as an extra glance, not a slip. Rare legal consents are treated as new tasks each time, so automaticity is weak. Keyboard users walk Tab and Enter; left/right automaticity becomes “where is default focus,” and scramble hurts them in a different shape. Automation scripts that click by coordinates also miss after a swap—that is the script’s place memory, isomorphic but not this point’s subject.
Applying it
- Do not swap confirm/cancel slots inside one dialog class, and do not swap only on “the important one” as a deterrent—that is when automaticity is strongest.
- Do not park a destructive action in the platform’s confirm slot to borrow automaticity.
- Change order only as a product-wide migration, and break automaticity during the migration with copy and spacing, not a silent swap.
- Verify by sending veterans through ten save confirms as fast as they can, swapping order on the seventh. “I noticed after I clicked,” rather than “I stopped to read,” means scramble detonated an automatic miss.
