The fitting initiative level for one function can differ by situation and should not be globally uniform

What it is

Auto-dimming may execute in one’s own bedroom, should only suggest in a shared meeting room, and may have to be forbidden under surgical lights. The fitting initiative rung for one function moves with situation. One global setting cannot serve every room and calendar. Global uniformity spreads the tightest scene’s constraint, or the loosest scene’s convenience, onto the rest by mistake.

Why it happens

Situation changes observers, reversibility, and competing tasks. At home, alone, the social cost of execute is low; in an office with bystanders, execute is a performance; while driving, attention is on the road and even a hint may overload. Time is situation too: night do-not-disturb and daytime nudging should not share one execute switch. A global knob assumes a constant loss matrix; an implicit system’s loss matrix is a function of situation. Choosing a rung by situation needs computable labels (place, calendar, focus mode) and a fallback to a more conservative rung when the label is uncertain—uncertain situation must not default to execute.

Studying it

Use scene cards or field switches (home / commute / meeting) to measure acceptability of the same function at each rung. Factors: situation, bystanders present, whether the user is in a primary task. Outcomes: chosen rung, repair after overreach. A lab fixed in one quiet room overestimates “may execute.” Diaries in which people mark “it should not have acted then” map the moments the rung should drop.

Where it stops holding

Situation detection itself errs: treating a meeting room as home raises the execute rung by mistake, which is more dangerous than a conservative global. When situation is uncertain, drop a rung rather than keep the previous scene’s high initiative. Some users strongly want “the same everywhere”; a global lock should exist as an explicit choice, still shipping conservative. Regulated places (cabin, exam hall) may cap a function’s initiative; the product’s situation table must be cut by those caps.

Applying it

• Build a situation table for the function: place / calendar / focus mode × highest allowed rung, defaulting to suggestion.
• When the situation label is low-confidence, drop one rung automatically and briefly say “did not auto-execute because situation is unclear.”
• Offer “use one rung in all situations” as an advanced option, not as the only model.
• Verify by walking the device from a private space into an occupied meeting and checking that the initiative rung drops; if it does not, global uniformity is in charge.
