What it is

A keyboard-embedded pointing stick sits between keycaps, letting people apply force with an index finger while remaining in a typing posture, and click with nearby thumbs. Its central value is reduced homing: moving from text entry to pointing does not require relocating a whole hand to a mouse or trackpad.

Why it happens

Mouse and trackpad use requires leaving home keys, finding a device, and re-establishing control. A keyboard-centre stick is reachable from typing fingers, shortening hand migration and reacquisition. Studying it

In type–select alternation, compare an embedded stick, trackpad, and mouse for time from final keypress to first correct pointing, selection error, total task time, and hand movement. An isolated acquisition task misses the primary advantage in keyboard context.

Where it stops holding

Reduced homing helps frequent brief pointing, while long travel, complex drag, and fine graphical editing can favour larger devices. Keyboard layout, hand size, handedness, and laptop key pressure alter reachability. A trackpad is also close to keys but has different hand migration.

• Evaluate embedded control in text-heavy workflows with frequent small pointing actions.
• Make click buttons, cap, and main finger posture simultaneously comfortable, avoiding another load while saving migration.
