Automatic zoom saves time only when target prediction is correct

What it is

Automatic zoom predicts what a person wants to inspect or operate and adjusts scale on their behalf. A correct prediction saves gestures and path planning; a wrong prediction requires noticing the displacement, undoing or returning, and reorienting, often costing more than no assistance.

Why it happens

Automation transfers control to a prediction model. Correct predictions remove action steps; incorrect ones alter viewport and context, disrupt the existing plan, and add monitoring, diagnosis, and recovery. Even infrequent errors can have high mean cost because one wrong zoom can remove the target and spatial orientation.

Studying it

Measure total time, recovery, undo, lost targets, and trust separately for correct triggers, incorrect triggers, and no trigger. Accuracy alone is insufficient: report error severity and recovery time. Include ambiguous intent, neighbouring targets, and rapid task switching.

Where it stops holding

Assistance may be worthwhile when targets are highly predictable, an automatic move is easy to ignore or undo, and landmarks remain stable. In exploratory, creative, or unclear-goal work, forced zoom is more likely to interrupt thought. Average savings cannot conceal a minority of costly errors.

Applying it

• Make automatic zoom previewable and immediately reversible, preserving a manual zoom route.
• Auto-execute only at high prediction confidence and clear task context; otherwise suggest rather than force a view change.
• Evaluate recovery cost, wrong-trigger rate, and how often people disable assistance, not only gestures saved on successful cases.
