Elijah Mayfield

Elijah Mayfield is a researcher and entrepreneur dedicated to advancing language technology and promoting equity in education. He was a Ph.D. graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University focusing on Natural Language Processing and Discourse Analysis, particularly at the intersection of Sociolinguistics and Machine Learning. He developed LightSide, an open-source text mining tool designed for non-expert users, which has been widely used in education to support over 250,000 students in improving their writing skills. LightSide Labs was acquired by Turnitin in 2014. Academically, he is the author of numerous top-tier papers with research spanning dialogue structure, social role modeling, and ethical issues in AI applications for education. He was awarded the IBM Ph.D. Fellowship and recognized in Forbes' "30 Under 30" in Education.
