Helena M. Mentis

Helena M. Mentis is a professor in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) and leads the Bodies in Motion Lab. Her research focuses on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), and health informatics, with a specific emphasis on image and visualization interaction in medical collaboration. She is dedicated to exploring how medical professionals and lay patients comprehend medical images through interaction and manipulation by developing innovative image interaction systems. In areas such as surgical contexts and patient motion analysis, she leverages cutting-edge interaction devices and imaging technologies, including Microsoft Kinect, Google Glass, and Hololens, to drive technological advancements. Additionally, she is an active design researcher working to address inequalities in digital health design through socio-technical approaches.

She holds a PhD in Information Sciences and Technology from Pennsylvania State University, an MS in Communication from Cornell University, and a BS in Psychology from Virginia Tech. Previously, she held research positions at institutions such as Mobile Life in Sweden, the University of Cambridge, Microsoft Research Cambridge, and Harvard Medical School.
