James D. Hollan

James D. Hollan is a professor of Cognitive Science at the University of California, San Diego, as well as an affiliate professor of Computer Science. He leads the Distributed Cognition and Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory and co-directs the Design Lab with Edwin Hutchins. Hollan's research focuses on the cognitive implications of computational media, aiming to improve system design through dynamic interactive representations. His research spans cognitive ethnography, distributed cognition, human-computer interaction, information visualization, and video data analysis. He has previously worked at Xerox PARC and Bellcore and has received the ACM SIGCHI Lifetime Research Award. His work has had a significant impact on both academia and industry.
